Puerto Rico: Celebrating Our Anniversary (18 years), Father’s Day and All 3 kids out of high school!!!
I just got back from a 6-day, 5-night trip to Puerto Rico. This is my third time in PR but my husband’s 1st. We stayed in two different condos in two different cities: San Juan and Luquillo (Loo-key-yo). Both condos had ocean views and were walking distance to everything. The location in San Juan, did not require a car since it was a 5-minute cab ride from the airport and literally everything was so close. The ride to Luquillo was about 45 minutes away but once there you didn’t need a car as everything again was so close. We rented a car which was cheap to reserve but had so many charges once we got there like their insurance and prepaid toll fees. Car price online was $189 but ended up being over $400 with all the fees. This was the worst part of my vacation so I literally have nothing to complain about other than that.
San Juan – We ate at so many different restaurants. One of the best was Zul Rooftop. The tacos (shrimp and fish), the corn and both of my mojitos were perfect. The bites were small but I was so full. The view from the rooftop was a great bonus. I ate red snapper three times on this vacation and each time was great. The sweet plantains were excellent everywhere I had them. I am not a fan of mofongo or tostones. The mojitos everywhere were the best ever!!!
Casa Bacardi / Old San Juan – We took a whole day for excursions. We started the day with a tour and mixology class at Casa Bacardi. I highly recommend the tour. It was a quick ride around the distillery and an hour-long mixology class. We learned how to “correctly” make a mojito. Yes, I have been making mine wrong. LOL. Old San Juan was a short drive from Casa Bacardi and we sent about 2 hours there and visited San Cirstobal Castle. I think this was my husband’s favorite part of the vacation. We walked into a history book.
Luquillo – Our last 3 days were spent in Luquillo. I always stay in San Juan so I wanted a different experience this time. The area is full of locals and hardly any tourists. We found a juke joint / hole in the wall restaurant/convenience store (El Flamboyan) that had a full bar and dive bar food. The hamburger and fries were the best I have had in a LONNNGGG time. We found out a day later that the juke joint was “THE” place the locals go for the last 20 years but has gone down a little in the last few years. We also visited Luquillo beach, less than a mile away. This place had over 30 bars / restaurants back to back on one long strip. Just about any food you can think of BBQ, authentic PR food, sweets, mojito bars, burgers and seafood. It’s a great place to go bar hop and try different types of food. The parking is a nightmare but worth it if you go during the less busy times. Right behind the restaurants is a nice beach. Super crowded with mostly locals but pretty blue water.
I enjoy PR and look forward to going back soon.
